One important element to skincare is the use of a toner. A toner is a water-based solution (sometimes alcohol-free) that uses ingredients to keep the moisture in the upper layers of the skin to prevent skin dehydration. Other benefits of a toner in your skin care regiments is:

  • It shrinks pores: gently blotting and wiping your face will remove oil and give the appearance of smaller pores. By reducing the pore size, it minimizes the chances of environmental and topical impurities from penetrating the skin.
  • It gives your skin pH balance: Our skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance of between five and six. After washing your face with a cleanser, using makeup removers, masking, etc this  changes its pH balance. Applying a toner, it restores your skin pH balance back to its proper lever.
  • It moisturizes: As I’ve mentioned above, a toner helps moisturize the skin.
  • It refreshes skin: After removing all your makeup, washing your face with a cleanser, wiping your face with a cotton pad drenched in toner can help remove the last traces of any dirt, makeup, and oil residue. Out on the market there are different kinds of toners so making a decision can be hard.

Types of Skin toners:

Skin Bracers and Refreshers:These are the mildest form of toners. They usually contain no alcohol (0-10%), water and other ingredients such as glycerine. A good example of this type of toner would have to be rosewater. This type of toners are the kindest to the skin, and are the most suitable on dry, sensitive and normal skin types.

Skin tonics: These are more stronger and contain a small quantity of alcohol (up t0 20%). A good example of this would be orange flower water. Skin tonics are good for people with normal, oily, and combination skin types.

Astringents: Strongest form of toners and contain a high portion of alcohol (20-60%), antiseptic ingredients, water, etc. These are commonly recommended for oily skin as they can be drying. Witch hazel is a good example of an astringent. To prevent dehydration, I would apply a good hydrating serum or moisturizer after using this type of toner.

I hope that this run down of different elements and types of toners helped you narrow down what you are looking for the next time you decide to make a purchase. Considering the ingredients and your skin type will help you choose the correct toner for you. Understanding your skin is broken down into many different steps and now that I have touched on the subject of toners, I am off to play with my babies. Until next time  🙂
